"R.S. Field produced it over the course of five days in Nashville at the now defunct Hum Depot studio. 38 Special was tracking in the upstairs room and we were down below. Kenny Vaughn, Jared Reynolds, and Jimmy Lester were the band. It was the first time Allison Moorer sang with me, but not the last. A month later we went out to the late Bucky Baxter’s house and cut one more track with Bucky and Adam Landry. The album features co-writes with Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, John Evans, and Adam Carroll. My then manager, Mike Crowley and I formed HWY 87 records and self-released it. It went on to become the first independent record to reach #1 on the American chart. Joshua Jones at KHYI put Down The Road Tonight on heavy rotation in Dallas and it became a minor hit. My crowds in some parts of Texas went from 50 to 500 almost overnight and it was an exciting and surreal time. Years later the song Take Me Away would make an appearance in the movie Country Strong. "
