Best Vinyl Records for Your Fall Mood
As the seasons shift from Summer to Fall, we all could use a few albums to throw on our records player that captures the feeling and provide a proper soundtrack. The days get shorter and colder, and hot summer hits just don’t fit like they did a few months back.
If you need the perfect soundtrack to the sweater weather or a few voices to keep you warm as things cool down, look no further. We’ve got you covered with four records for celebrating and surviving the Fall.
Gregory Alan Isakov – Evening Machines
With the arrival of Fall comes the promise of earlier evenings, and a feeling that things are soon coming to a close. Gregory Alan Isakov knows just how to spend these days and nights with his lush studio album Evening Machines. These are gorgeous campfire stories, expertly told by a seasoned storyteller.
Put your feet up by the fire and relax – you’re in good hands. Isakov takes us on a night-time journey through these songs, never letting it get away from him. Where some feel constrained by the shortening days, Isakov invites us to lay our burdens down and stay for a while, asking “Where You Gonna Go”, anyway?

The Staves – Good Woman
For the past 10-ish years since their debut album, sisters Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor, aka The Staves, have delivered carefully crafted songs that play like warm jackets. On their 2021 effort Good Woman, this family affair makes us feel right at home for the Fall, with inviting tracks like “Nothing’s Gonna Happen” asking us to open up and let them in.
Finger snaps in the opening of “Devotion” feel like the crunch wandering through a neighborhood as the leaves fall, before The Staves’ trademark tight harmonies drift into oblivion. The warm ride comes to a close with the piano ballad “Waiting On Me To Change” reminding us that, unlike the weather, we change when we want to.

First Aid Kit – Ruins
Sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit know just how to help us ring in the fall and winter months, singing away our seasonal blues with their tight harmonies and hopeful hooks. The duo came up in Stockholm, Sweden, and found alt-country by way of sad songwriting king Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), making their way in his folky footsteps. As the trees begin to turn and the temperatures drop, Ruins is one of the best vinyl records for your Fall season spins.
From the album opener “Rebel Heart” asking “Why do I keep dreaming of you?” to the soft landing of the closer “Nothing Has to Be True”, First Aid Kit has just the dreamy cure we need on the rainy days and the sunny days alike.

Sufjan Stevens – Carrie and Lowell
Few records feel quite as much like “Fall Records” to us as Sufjan Stevens’ folk masterpiece Carrie and Lowell. After the big orchestral majesty of 2005’s Come On, Feel the Illinoise and the experimental electronica adventure of Age of Adz in 2010, Stevens returned to his simpler folk roots with Carrie and Lowell in 2015, telling his most personal stories yet.
From the delicate opener “Death With Dignity”, to the lightly shaded cry for help “The Only Thing”, to the celebration of unrequited desire in “John My Beloved”, Stevens is a master of vulnerability. This is a patient record, taking its time to remind us that all things may change, or come to an end, or disappoint our expectations – and they are all, in their own way, quite beautiful.
